The Position
This position is with the University of Nevada Reno's Cooperative Extension's Orchard in North Las Vegas, NV. This position will be responsible for gathering, analyzing and assembling data and preparing reports for the professional staff using specialized instruments such as neutron probes, infrared thermometers, PH meters, microscopes, water meters, balances, and computer software. This position will prepare and organize field and plot plantings for agricultural research by designing experimental formats; preparing fields or plots and planting seeds; applying fertilizer and herbicide within experimental parameters; tracking plant growth, soil conditions and watering cycles; and harvesting resulting crops. The incumbent will install, maintain and repair water measuring devices to quantify water use and to compare vegetation response to differing water regimen using common hand and powered tools. Position will set up greenhouse research projects by collecting plants from the field; establishing new plantings from seeds; using propagation techniques when applicable; and developing soil, water and fertilizing formulas. Incumbents may occasionally perform tasks related to the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the research facility such as operating farm machinery and field equipment including trucks, tractors, mowers, backhoes, and drilling equipment; performing preventative maintenance and minor repairs to keep the equipment in good operating condition; performing daily facility maintenance including pruning trees and shrubs, and maintaining buildings, fences, roads and other similar structures.
The duties of this will require the incumbent to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions; lift equipment and materials weighing as much as 75 pounds; and handle hazardous materials. The work schedule is M-F 8am to 5pm.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in biological, soil or crop science or appropriate field and two years of experience related to the assigned research area in which the applicant performed duties equivalent to preparing experimental field plots, preparing feed rations according to research criteria and collecting and/or recording simple field data; OR graduation from high school or the equivalent and three years of experience related to the assigned research area in which the applicant performed duties equivalent to those described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    As part of the hiring process, applicants for positions in the Nevada System of Higher Education may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks.
Special Requirements
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
Additional Position Criteria
    Minimum qualifications for this position are: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in biological, soil or crop science or appropriate field and two years of experience related to the assigned research area; OR Graduation from high school or the equivalent and three years of experience related to the assigned research area.
    Requires the ability to use various scientific apparatus to test, sample and gather data.
    Requires working knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives in as agronomy, soil science, horticulture, water conservation and greenhouse maintenance.
    The duties of this will require the incumbent to work mostly outdoors in extreme weather conditions; lift equipment and materials weighing as much as 75 pounds; and handle hazardous materials.
