APPROXIMATE ANNUAL SALARY -  $54,204.48 to  $81,139.68  PAY GRADE: 36
The salary range indicated in this announcement is based on the Employee/Employer retirement compensation schedule. An employer-only option is available at a reduced salary range. Generally, salaries start at the lowest level of a step 1 and increase with each year of service to the highest level of a step 10.

The Position
DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS).
PLEASE BE ADVISED THE CORRECT GRADE LEVEL FOR THIS POSITION IS 39. THE POSTED YEARLY SALARY RANGE IS CORRECT.
DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety including the Adult Parole and Probation Divisiion, Highway Patrol Division, Investigations Division, Capitol Police Division and Fire Marshal's Office.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation as a Category I Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement academy and one year of law enforcement or experience in a police or fire agency; OR one year of experience as a DPS Officer I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicant must meet current Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
    Incumbent must pass the Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment.
    Incumbent must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy.
Special Requirements
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
    This position is subject to call-out or call-back.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Statewide travel is required.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a felony in this State or of any offense, which would be a felony if committed in this state.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of any offense involving the illegal sale or manufacture of controlled substances.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of domestic violence.
    The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have used any illegal controlled substance within one year of the date of application including prescription drugs not prescribed to them.
Additional Position Criteria
    Must be a US Citizen and 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
The Examination
NOTE: As part of the selection process, the Department of Public Safety will conduct:
1) POST Category I Physical fitness exam which consists of a vertical jump of 14 inches, Agility Run in 19.5 seconds; 30 sit-ups in 1 minute; 23 push-ups (not timed), a 300 meter-run in 68 seconds, and a 1.5 mile run in 16 minutes and 57 seconds.
2) Extensive background investigation
3) Drug test
4) Polygraph
5) Physical examination

There is no fee charged to the applicant for the above five tests
Application Evaluation Exam
The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.

1) The Highway Patrol Division promotes safety on Nevada Highways by providing law enforcement traffic services to the motoring public. The Highway Patrol specializes in traffic related enforcement in all communities within Nevada. Assignments within the Highway Patrol can range from resident officer posts in our rural communities to metropolitan law enforcement in our Northern or Southern Commands. Please indicate if the Division of Highway Patrol is your first choice, second choice, third choice, fourth choice, or fifth choice. Please include any experience that would make you a good candidate for this division.
2) The Division of Parole & Probation provides for the safety of Nevada's residents and guests, through community based supervision of adults convicted of either felonies or serious misdemeanors. Specifically, this entails the enforcement and verification of compliance with the conditions of parole and grants of probation. Please indicate if the Division of Parole & Probation is your first choice, second choice, third choice, fourth choice, or fifth choice. Please include any experience that would make you a good candidate for this division.
3) The Capitol Police Division provides police services to specific state properties. Officers provide a visible deterrent to crime at a fixed post while assisting dignitaries, state employees, and visitors. Work locations in Carson City include the Capitol Building, Governor's Mansion, Supreme Court, Attorney General's Building or vehicle patrol of several other buildings. Las Vegas Officers are assigned to the Supreme Court or Sawyer Office Building. Please indicate if the Capitol Police Division is your first choice, second choice, third choice, fourth choice, or fifth choice. Please include any experience that would make you a good candidate for this division.
