The Position
Accountants are responsible for preparing financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the standards of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
The Accountant 3 position is located in the Payroll Unit of the Department of Administration's Division of Human Resource Management and may be filled in Carson City or Las Vegas. This advanced-level role is responsible for performing complex accounting and payroll functions to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations. Key duties include preparing and reconciling Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) reports, monitoring and resolving accounting and payroll system interface issues, and processing vendor payments with accurate reconciliation. The position oversees tax reporting and reconciliation for federal and state requirements, including Forms 941 and W-2, and plays a critical role in fiscal year-end processes. The incumbent will develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for payroll accounting, provide payroll certification training to internal staff and agency partners, and prepare and review journal vouchers (JVA/JVD) for payroll-related transactions. Additionally, this position serves as manager for the Accountant 2 and Accounting Technicians 1 and 2 within the payroll unit. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, or closely related field and two years of experience performing professional accounting work; OR Bachelor's degree in business administration and three years of experience performing professional accounting work; OR one year of experience as an Accountant II in Nevada State service.
