The Position
Maintenance Repair Specialists perform a variety of skilled work in two or more of the mechanical and construction trades in order to repair, construct, and/or maintain buildings, grounds and equipment.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
The Nevada Department of Corrections has a vacancy for a Maintenance Repair Specialist II, located at Northern Nevada Correctional Center, in Carson City, NV. Incumbents in these positions are responsible to maintain, repair, and modify projects related to plumbing, carpentry, electrical, painting and equipment. Incumbents review blueprints and schematics; calculate load requirements; install switches, relays, circuit breaker panels, wiring, and fixtures. Individuals perform skilled carpentry work to include construction, maintenance, repair, and modification of facilities, fixtures, furniture and woodwork; construct forms and pour and finish concrete for slabs and floors; construct roofs and walls; and install doors and windows. Incumbents maintain, repair and modify plumbing systems and fixtures; replace lines; assemble pipes and fittings; install hot water heaters; and repair three-phase electric well pumps and controls. Individuals maintain equipment; repair carburetors; overhaul automatic and standard transmissions; repair front and rear differentials and hydraulic systems. Incumbents must be able to function as a lead worker for inmate crews on a regular basis and document inmate performance through completion of periodic performance reports. Incumbents are responsible for implementing security procedures which include securing the work area from unauthorized inmates and accountability for assigned inmates, staff, tools and equipment.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Four years of progressively responsible experience under the supervision of journey level trades persons in two or more of the major building or mechanical trades and one year of journey level experience which included responsibility for performing a variety of repair and maintenance activities, laying out jobs and ordering materials; OR one year of journey level experience as a Maintenance Repair Specialist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Incumbents may be required to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays in addition to their normal work schedules.
Special Requirements
A valid driver's license is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
