The Position
Legal Secretaries perform specialized secretarial duties for attorneys, administrative law judges, and/or hearings/appeals officers including preparing legal documents and correspondence; calendaring; maintaining records; and providing assistance on routine problems and inquiries which are not of a legal nature.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This recruitment is for a Legal Secretary II position with the State of Nevada Department of Administration, Hearings & Appeals Division, located in Las Vegas. The selected candidate will serve as the judicial secretary to a Hearings Officer (HO), managing calendaring responsibilities such as scheduling, rescheduling, issuing notices, and coordinating stacked hearings. This role acts as the direct liaison for telephone status checks, ensuring the HO is informed of case updates and providing instructions as needed. The position requires skilled legal clerical support, including the creation and monitoring of all court-related documents such as correspondence, pleadings, motions, orders, resets, stipulations, applications, and decisions requiring the HO's signature. The Legal Secretary II must be able to distinguish priorities, route files to the appropriate courtroom, and accurately reflect all changes on the HO's daily calendar. Additionally, the role involves serving as a point of contact for attorneys, employer representatives, members of the public, and other stakeholders. The position also includes performing general clerical and administrative duties as necessary. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of clerical experience, two of which were performing progressively responsible legal secretarial work in a training capacity; OR one year of experience as a Legal Secretary I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
