The Position
Family Services Specialists perform a variety of duties to assist families in achieving self-sufficiency. Incumbents determine eligibility for a variety of public assistance and health related programs to include, but not limited to: Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families within the Division of Welfare and Supportive Services and Title IVE, Title XIX, foster care, adoption payments and other State funded programs for children in custody or who have been adopted within the Division of Child and Family Services; provide coordinated employment and training services including assessment, vocational guidance, support services and education to clients; and/or provide child support enforcement services. Positions in this series may specialize in one service area or may work in multiple areas depending upon the needs of the agency.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.
The Division of Social Services (DSS) is recruiting for Family Services Specialist I positions in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Employment and Training Program (SNAPET) unit. There are positions available at the Southern Professional Development Center and the Henderson District Office. This Family Service Specialist does not automatically progress to an Family Services Specialist 2.
In the SNAPET program, the incumbent will provided personalized case management to SNAPET program participants. The selected applicant will work with SNAPET customers to elicit information regarding education, training, work experience, and occupational goals or interests; advise job seekers of career and education options; other resources; edit and proof resumes; provide training and orientations; identify obstacles to employment; coach customers in job seeking skills such as the employment application process and interviews. The incumbent will also contact and maintain ongoing relationships with community partners such as employers and educational institutions, answer inquiries from the public, community organizations, and partners regarding program services. Typical duties include completing assessments to identify barriers to develop an employment plan, providing support services, documenting case information, providing referrals, motivating, coaching, and monitoring customer progress. The Division of Social Services (DSS) uses intermittent positions to supplement full-time staff. DSS intermittent positions are full-time positions with a regular work schedule but have different layoff rights than permanent positions. DSS moves intermittent positions to permanent positions based on attrition and seniority. A typing certificate issued within the last year must accompany your application and verify your typing speed of 35 wpm. This typing certificate can be obtained through a staffing agency or for free from any Nevada Job Connect office. No online typing test will be accepted. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience in a clerical/administrative/program support role which included customer relations; obtaining, verifying and evaluating information; organizing and prioritizing work in order to meet timelines and standards; applying and explaining program rules, regulations, policies and procedures; and performing mathematical computations; OR one year of experience as an Administrative Assistant III in Nevada State service; OR two years of experience as an Administrative Assistant II in Nevada State service; OR sixty semester credits from an accredited college or university in general studies, business administration, social science or human services and one year of experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Notes
In accordance with NRS 293.5045, a voter registration agency shall not knowingly employ a person whose duties will include the registration of voters if they have been convicted of a felony involving theft or fraud. Most positions in this series fall under this NRS.
For most positions in this series, applicants must meet the minimum typing speed established by the agency at the time of recruitment.
Additional Position Criteria
Must type a minimum of 35 wpm accurately. A typing certificate issued within the last twelve (12) months must accompany your application and verify you net typing speed of at least 35 wpm in a five minute test. This typing certificate can be attained thru a staffing agency or for free from any Nevada Job Connect office. No online typing test will be accepted.
This recruitment is only open to current classified employees in State service with at least six months of continuous, full-time equivalent service who currently work in the Division of Social Services.
