The salary range indicated in this announcement is based on the Employee/Employer retirement compensation schedule. An employer-only option is available at a reduced salary range. Generally, salaries start at the lowest level of a step 1 and increase with each year of service to the highest level of a step 10.

The Position
Under general supervision, Therapeutic Recreation Specialists perform initial and periodic assessments, treatment planning, and therapeutic services to assist individuals in correctional institutions, rehabilitation programs, long-term care facilities, residential facilities, mental health facilities and facilities for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to improve their mental and physical health and/or social functioning.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This position is located at High Desert State Prison. Incumbents are responsible for helping inmates improve their mental and physical health through therapeutic recreation services. They begin by conducting initial and ongoing assessments to develop individualized treatment plans. As part of their role, they plan, organize, and lead a variety of structured activities such as basketball, volleyball, ping-pong, strength training, board games, card games, and puzzles. Activities are adapted or modified as needed to meet the specific needs of participants, including fabricating or adjusting equipment for those with special requirements. Throughout these activities, they observe and evaluate inmate participation and performance, track progress, and make adjustments to ensure continued improvement. They document any notable incidents, challenges, or achievements, and regularly update treatment goals and strategies based on each individual?s development.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in therapeutic recreation, recreation, or specialty area, such as art, dance, music or physical education and one year of technical experience in recreation therapy in a clinical, residential, community-based and/or correctional environment; OR certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
Certification through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification as required by the agency for accreditation by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospitals or other accrediting body is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required.
Must be available to work evenings, weekends and some holidays.
