The Position
Psychiatric Nurses provide professional nursing care to individuals with developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities or social, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, in an institution or out-patient setting in accordance with the authorized scope of practice specified in the Nurse Practice Act.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This position is located at High Desert State Prison (HDSP) in Indian Springs.
The Nevada Department of Corrections is recruiting for full-time Psychiatric Nurse 2. This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies in the Southern Region to include Indian Springs facilities.
Psychiatric Nurses provide professional nursing and psychiatric care and services to mentally and/or physically ill or disabled offenders in an institutional setting. The Psychiatric Nurse 2 works under the supervision of, and continuous consultation with, the institution Sr. Psychiatrist and Director of Nursing Services.
Incumbent will work directly with Mental Health offenders to carry out new or on-going nursing care assignments; perform health and needs assessments; promote optimal health and patient independence; document problems requiring nursing interventions using appropriate charting protocols; plan patient care addressing chief presenting problems incorporating the plan of nursing care into the multidisciplinary treatment plan; attend treatment groups; document patient teaching needs and discharge planning; and communicate care plans to other nurses to maintain continuity of care.
This position requires a high level of independence. Incumbent must be reliable, have excellent communication skills and able to apply critical thinking, assessment, intervention, and evaluation skills to be able to make quick but accurate medical decisions. Nurses must be able to work under pressure, adjust to change and be able to work well as part of a health care team.
Experience working in a facility or institution with individuals with mental illness or intellectual disabilities is required.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which included working in a facility or institution with individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities or intellectual disabilities; OR one year of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
