The Position
Incumbents function as managers who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate supervisors; develop policies and procedures; and allocate staff and resources to accomplish goals and objectives.
The incumbent will serve as the Chief of NDEP's Bureau of Federal Facilities and will be located in Las Vegas. The Chief will supervise and support NDEP Environmental Scientists and engineers who support long-range programmatic planning for the safe disposal of low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS); oversee corrective action and closure of sites within the NNSS that have legacy contamination from nuclear weapons and propulsion development and testing; provide environmental oversight of the Department of Energy's operations at NNSS to ensure they are protective of public health, safety, and the environment. The Chief will also work, along with assigned Bureau staff to advance current state planning priorities, which include, but are not limited to, gaining an in-depth working knowledge of the attributes and classification of LLRW streams from each of the 25 Department of Energy (DOE) waste generators that ship LLRW to the NNSS for disposal; forecast and gain a working knowledge of new and/or unique LLRW streams destined for the NNSS for disposal; participate in enhanced waste verification at DOE sites; review waste stream profiles; and engage with various stakeholders and agencies. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a natural or physical science, environmental science/studies, anthropology, engineering, or closely related field and six years of professional experience regulating industry's pollution of the environment or implementing environmental compliance and/or planning programs, two years of which were in a supervisory capacity; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
