DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as DPS Officers. This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies in the following locations: Alamo, Austin, Battle Mountain, Beatty, Eureka, Fallon, Fernley, Lovelock, Hawthorne, Orovada, Pioche, Wells, Winnemucca, Yerington, Reno, and Ely. DPS Officers perform a wide range of law enforcement and public safety duties across various divisions, including Nevada Highway Patrol, State Fire Marshal's Office, Investigations Division Parole & Probation, and Capitol Police. As a DPS Officer I, you will Begin in a trainee capacity, acquiring the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the role. Receive training in core law enforcement functions and progress to the next level upon meeting minimum qualifications, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and receiving a recommendation from your appointing authority. Perform duties such as traffic enforcement, accident investigation, DUI enforcement, and public safety response.
Eligible for specialized assignments, including K-9 Unit; Motorcycle Patrol; Reserve Officer (Capitol Police Division); Fixed post operations; And more! Must possess a current Category I P.O.S.T. certificate from a Nevada-approved law enforcement academy. Willingness to work varied shifts, including holidays, swing, and graveyard shifts. Upon successful graduation from a Nevada P.O.S.T.-approved law enforcement academy, you will work under close supervision within your assigned division. Officers are trained to serve anywhere in the state. As personal or family needs change, transfers or reassignments to other geographic areas may be considered based on agency needs and position availability. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Certification as a Category I Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T approved law enforcement academy. |
 |
Applicants must meet minimum standards for appointment as a peace officer as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code. |

Incumbents must pass the Peace Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment. |
 |
Incumbents must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy. |
 |
This position is subject to call-out or call-back. |

A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.

The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of a D.U.I. within the last five years, or two D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime. |

The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have been convicted of domestic violence. |

The Department of Public Safety will not appoint a person to a law enforcement position if they have used any illegal controlled substance within one year of the date of application including prescription drugs not prescribed to them. |

A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. |

| The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. 1) The salary range indicated in this announcement is based on the Employee/Employer post-tax retirement compensation schedule. An employer-only option is available at a reduced salary range. ($64,289.52- $96,486.48). Under this pre-tax plan your take home pay is higher. The employer pays the total PERS contribution on your behalf. You pay for your half of the PERS contribution through a salary reduction or in lieu of a pay raise. Employer paid contributions are not deposited into your member account and are not refundable if you terminate from your employment. Generally, salaries start at the lowest level of a step 1 and increase with each year of service to the highest level of a step 10. Do you understand these options.
