The Position
Environmental Health Specialists are responsible for conducting drug licensing investigations; label review, sampling and inspection of drug and cosmetic manufacturing plants; inspection of dairies and milk processing plants; certification of septic systems; inspection of food warehouses, traditional food and drink establishments, health facilities, public institutions and other related facilities to ensure compliance with State laws and regulations.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. The Division of Public & Behavioral Health, Environmental Health Section (EHS) is recruiting for an Environmental Health Specialist 1 Underfill for an EHS3, in Reno, NV. Under the direct supervision of the Environmental Health Specialist IV, this position will conduct establishment inspections, and investigate illnesses and other public health problems.
EHS functions include permitting, education, enforcement, consultation, and emergency response to prevent and mitigate environmental health hazards and to promote & protect the public health and the environment in the following areas: food protection; bottled water plants and distributors; cosmetic plants; public accommodations; recreational vehicle parks; institutional environmental health; recreational swimming areas and waters; individual sewage disposal systems; invasive body decoration; and emergency preparedness. Incumbents will be able to read and understand technical, legal, and scientific documents; organize material and information systematically and logically to minimize duplication of effort; work effectively with frequent interruptions and/or distractions in such locations as construction sites, emergencies, and processing plants; perform basic math to determine disinfection rates, design septic systems, and calculate fees; use a personal computer and associated software. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university which includes the satisfactory completion of at least 45 quarter hours, or 30 semester hours, of academic work in science courses, including biology, chemistry, physics, geology, sanitary engineering or environmental engineering.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    This position may require up to 50% travel.
    College transcripts must be submitted with the employment application.
    This position requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
