Under general direction, Wildlife Staff Specialists perform program research, planning, analysis and evaluation; draft proposed legislation, policies, procedures and regulations related to wildlife management programs and activities throughout the State.
This position leads the Department's Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) Program. The WMA program is responsible for conserving and managing 14 WMA's totaling 166,000 acres and other NDOW managed properties. The position provides coordination, guidance and supervision to WMA Regional Supervisors, WMA Supervisors, and their staff to ensure that program objectives are met. Preferred location headquarters office in Reno. Key responsibilities include: Staff Leadership & Coordination - Guide and oversee staff in managing WMAs and other NDOW lands, ensuring effective execution of habitat and wildlife management plans. Habitat & Wildlife Management - Collaborate with staff to develop and implement comprehensive habitat improvement and wildlife management strategies for all WMAs and select lands. Federal Aid Project Management - Prepare and submit grant applications for federal aid project assistance. Ensure timely preparation and submission of annual federal aid project agreements, amendments, and job progress reports in compliance with grant requirements.
Budget Management - Develop and submit annual and biennial budgets for all WMA, land, and water inventory programs. Oversee financial planning and ensure efficient use of resources. Project Proposal Development: Create and submit project proposals for funding from various NDOW-managed funds, including Duck Stamp, Upland Bird Stamp, Habitat Conservation Fee, Industrial Development and Heritage funds. Strategic Planning - Lead the development and submission of Conceptual Wildlife Management Area Plans, ensuring they meet NDOW's strategic objectives. Land & Water Rights - Participate in the evaluation and decision-making process related to land and water right acquisitions. Engage in discussions and negotiations concerning water rights and land issues related to NDOW's interests. Develops and maintains department files pertaining to land/water inventories. Interagency Coordination - Foster communication and collaboration with various government and non-government agencies and organizations on wildlife-related issues, ensuring NDOW's interests are well-represented. Facility Management - Ensure WMA facilities are properly maintained. Additional responsibilities include reporting program achievements through legislative reports, Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioner meetings, and other platforms. Incumbent will need to exercise judgment and ingenuity to prioritize work and devise effective strategies.

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in wildlife management, biology or closely related field and four years of professional experience that included organizing, planning and completing wildlife management studies, writing technical reports and preparing species or land use management plans and recommendations related to wildlife management; OR one year as a Biologist III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. |
