The Position
Conservation Staff Specialists assist in developing, formulating, and coordinating programs, policies and procedures related to areas such as resource management, safety and training, fire management and policy management pertinent to the assigned area of natural resource management, preservation, conservation and protection.
Under close supervision, incumbents continue to receive training in performing the duties described in the series concept related to the assigned area of natural resource management, preservation, conservation, and protection. This is the continuing trainee level in the series and incumbents may progress to the next level in the series upon meeting the minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance, and with the recommendation of the appointing authority. This recruitment is for a Conservation Staff Specialist Trainee 2 underfilling a Conservation Staff Specialist 1 position. The incumbent may auto-progress to the next level of the Conservation Staff Specialist series after meeting the minimum qualifications for the classification and satisfactory performance and endorsement by their appointing authority. Under general supervision, Conservation Staff Specialist 1s develop, formulate, and coordinate programs, policies and procedures related to the assigned area of natural resource management, preservation, conservation, and protection.
Will participate in weed and other noxious vegetation inventory and removal. Will function as lead on numerous conservation plans, includes spraying, mechanical removal, handwork, and other means to combat invasive and noxious species, including weeds, Russian Olives, mosquitos. Conduct various vegetation projects, park beautification, irrigation projects, do field surveys, weed inventory, weed abatement, trail enhancements, tree health. Seek and help administer conservation related grants and other funding opportunities within conservation program objectives, such as inventory and order chemicals and tools needed to achieve conservation objectives. Use GIS, Tremble units, Scout software to track weed inventory. Organize and share weed inventory information with appropriate other agencies. May function as liaison with contractors or other businesses with conservation related projects. Will work to propagate new plant materials, organize, and maintain the park greenhouse. Will actively assist the Park Supervisor with ranch lease management, rotation plans, water rights, fence maintenance, and protection of riparian areas. Assist the Park with public outreach, education, special events. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, ecology, environmental studies, environmental science, fire management, forestry, natural resource management, parks management, or related field and one year of professional experience in a relevant resource management field as described above; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Conservation Crew Supervisor II, Conservation Staff Specialist Trainee I, Firefighter II, Fish Hatchery Technician III, or Wildlife Area Technician III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Notes
    Current Certification as a Professional in Rangeland Management (CPRM) from the Society of Range Management, current certification as a Certified Forester from the Society of American Foresters, or current certification as an Associate Wildlife Biologist (AWB) from the Wildlife Society is equivalent to one year of professional experience. This certification must be attached at the time of application.
    Successful completion of the Research Associate Program through the Great Basin Institute will qualify applicants at the Conservation Staff Specialist Trainee II level.
    One year of experience in the AmeriCorps Program will qualify applicants at the Conservation Staff Specialist Trainee I level.
Special Requirements
    A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Additional Position Criteria
    May be required to work varying hours and shifts including holidays, weekends, and evenings.
    You'll be required to wear a uniform while on the job.
