The Position
In either a consultation or an enforcement mode, Industrial Hygienists identify, evaluate, and recommend controls for health hazards in the workplace through conducting inspections, investigations, surveys, research and analysis involving scientific disciplines such as chemistry, physics, engineering, epidemiology, toxicology, physiology, infection control, biomechanical and human factors engineering, and occupational health.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. OR Incumbents perform basic tasks or elements of the job not requiring the additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at the next level in the series. This position will be underfilling an Industrial Hygienist III, consultation with Business & Industry's Division of Industrial Relations, Nevada Safety Consultation and Training Section (NV SCATS) located in Las Vegas, Nevada. This position will report to the Las Vegas Consultation Supervisor: Industrial Hygienist under close supervision, identify, evaluate, and recommend controls for health hazards in the workplace through conducting inspections, investigations, surveys, research and analysis involving scientific disciplines such as chemistry, physics, engineering, epidemiology, toxicology, physiology, infection control, biomechanical and human factors engineering, and occupational health.
Health hazards include the following environmental stressors chemical, physical energy, biological, and ergonomic. Both acute and chronic effects on health are evaluated, and corrective measures are recommended to eliminate or reduce employees' exposure and improve employers' regulatory compliance posture and/or industrial insurance experience ratings. This is the journey level in the series and will be expected to perform at a high level within three months of hire. The Incumbent will promote safety practices, perform consultations independently, and educate employers on State and Federal safety laws and regulations. Primary responsibilities include conducting consultation surveys, informal training, safety program development, and identifying and recommending solutions for complex safety and health hazards. The incumbent is also tasked with writing consultation reports, researching the federal and state regulations and effectively communicating items found and corrective actions to the client. Additionally, this position will be assigned technical assistance days and will answer safety and health questions via phone, email or walk-ins. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health, chemistry, physics, biology, toxicology, environmental engineering, or closely related field and one year of professional experience with the principle duty of safety officer in an industrial or construction setting which included conducting inspections or investigations for the purpose of evaluating workplace health and safety; OR master's degree in industrial hygiene, upational safety and health, or closely related field; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of experience and education; OR one year of experience in Nevada State service as an Industrial Hygienist I; Safety Representative, Consultation; or Safety Representative, Enforcement.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
