The Position
Mental Health Counselors provide counseling, case management, direct clinical services, community and home based services, and behavioral and human services to mentally ill, developmentally disabled and/or emotionally disturbed clients in an outpatient, residential, community or similar setting.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. The Division of Child and Family Services is recruiting for a Mental Health Counselor 1 (MHC) underfilling an MHC2 at the at Caliente Youth Center (CYC), a staff-secure facility for youth ages 12-18 in Caliente, Nevada. The MHC provides counseling, case management, direct clinical services, community and home-based services, and behavioral and human services to mentally ill, developmentally disabled and/or emotionally disturbed. The MHC complete risk and/or suicide assessments, completes documents and follow reporting chain for these incidents as needed or requested by youth, family, therapist, or facility; Evaluates for and makes referrals as needed for psychological testing, psychiatric evaluations, substance abuse treatments, other specialized programming that requires a clinical referral.
Provides weekly updates for the committed to change program on each youth on caseload. Participates in biweekly admissions meeting and provides input on mental health needs of youth pending admission. Sees youth as regularly as indicated on the treatment plan and at the request of the youth, family and/or facility as clinically indicated. Provides contacts that both meet the needs of the children and families served and provide effective interventions resulting in positive outcomes. Collateral activities support treatment needs. CYC's mission is to promote positive value change to the youth served through a balanced, team-centered and strength-based approach. Nestled up against the mountains, CYC provides a unique atmosphere for correctional care. On site, in addition to the housing units, there is an accredited high school, a gymnasium, a football/soccer field, a baseball/softball diamond, and a workout room for aerobic, weightlifting, and cardio fitness, an administration building, an infirmary, a full-service kitchen and laundry and maintenance. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, social work or closely related academic field; OR an equivalent combination of education and clinical experience at or above a master's degree and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required.
    This position requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
