The salary range indicated in this announcement is based on the Employee/Employer retirement compensation schedule. An employer-only option is available at a reduced salary range. Generally, salaries start at the lowest level of a step 1 and increase with each year of service to the highest level of a step 10.

Chemists analyze air, water, tissue, milk, petroleum products, antifreeze, soil, cement, paint, construction materials, pesticide residue and other samples; operate sophisticated laboratory instrumentation; identify and document sample contents and contaminants; provide testimony to State boards, lawmakers and industry; and maintain records of results.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
The Nevada Department of Transportation is recruiting to fill the Chemist III position located in the Materials and Testing building in Carson City, Nevada. They are responsible for running of various tests and maintaining the associated laboratory equipment. Chemist III working in the Materials Division of NDOT perform various tests on various materials used in the construction of roads as well as materials that go onto the roads. Some of the materials tested are cement, pozzolan, Paint, and glass beads.

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry or closely related field and two years of professional experience as a chemist in a laboratory setting; OR one year of experience as a Chemist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
As a condition of employment, pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must first submit to a pre-employment screening test for controlled substances.
