Curators perform a broad range of professional and technical museum work involving, but not limited to, assessment, evaluation, survey, inventory, preservation, research, education and planning for a specific collection and/or program area within a museum.
Incumbents function as managers who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate supervisors; develop policies and procedures; and allocate staff and resources to accomplish goals and objectives.
The Nevada State Museum (NSM) in the Division of Museums and History within the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Curator IV of Anthropology. The Nevada State Museum's Curator IV of Anthropology is responsible for providing leadership, vision, access, planning and management for the museum's Anthropology Department. The NSM Anthropology collections are the largest of the 3 major collections area of the Museum. The collection focuses on the indigenous history of the Great Basin from the prehistoric period to the contemporary. The Curator of Anthropology oversees the Anthropology archivist (Curator II), the Collections Manager (Curator II), and a Curatorial Assistant.(Curator I). Anthropology collections are housed in two separate facilities which fall under the responsibility of the Curator of Anthropology. This position will work closely with the Curator III Registrar of the Museum. This position reports to the NSM Director.
The duties include overseeing processing; arrangement; cataloging; description; inventories; preservation; updating and maintaining procedures and policies; managing and maintaining relevant databases for the Anthropology Collection. The Curator IV is also responsible for strategic planning; budget management; personnel and volunteer supervision; project fundraising; procuring external funding for research; participation in public programs; assessing user experience and use statistics; and providing information for reports to the Board of Museums and History. The Curator IV is also serves as the point of contact for Tribal communications, facilitates Tribal consultations and maintains relationships with Nevada's 28 tribal entities. The Curator IV is also the Museum lead for NAGPRA compliance.
In addition to management and planning functions, the position plays an active role in the day-to-day operations of the NSM. The Curator is expected to participate in in-house and out-of-house outreach programming. The Curator is expected to research and produce media related to Nevada anthropology for the public. The Curator is expected to act as the point of contact for research requests for the anthropology collection.

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in history, prehistory, natural history, museum studies, education or closely related field plus three years of professional experience in a museum. This experience must have included responsibility for management of a large or major collection with federal or national significance (e.g., Bureau of Land Management; Bureau of Indian Affairs; US Forest Service); OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in history, prehistory, natural history, museum studies or closely related field plus four years of professional level experience in a museum as described above; OR two years of experience as a Curator III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. |
