The Position
Mental Health Counselors provide counseling, case management, direct clinical services, community and home based services, and behavioral and human services to mentally ill, developmentally disabled and/or emotionally disturbed clients in an outpatient, residential, community or similar setting.
The Division of Child and Family Services is recruiting for a Mental Health Counselor 1 underfilling a Mental Health Counselor 2 located in Las Vegas, NV. Summit View Youth Center (SVYC) is a maximum-security youth facility with a capacity of 48 beds. It provides programming and services to male youth between the ages of 15 to 21. SVYC sits on 13 acres in North Las Vegas near Nellis Air Force Base. SVYC opened on February 26, 2016 under the supervision of the Division of Child and Family Services. This facility, in cooperation with the Clark County School District, operates educational programs that offer both required and elective academic subjects, remedial programs, special education programs, vocational programs, and interscholastic activities. SVYC has nursing staff, mental health, contracted physicians, a contracted psychiatrist, and a contracted dentist to provide comprehensive on-site medical services. In addition, SVYC provides recreational programming, drug and alcohol counseling, recovery programming, group and individual counseling, problematic sexual behavior counseling, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.
The Mental Health Counselor 1 (MHC) completes risk and/or suicide assessments, completes documents, and follows reporting chain for incidents as needed or requested by youth, family, therapist, or facility. They evaluate for and make referrals as needed for psychological testing, psychiatric evaluations, substance abuse treatments, and other specialized programming that requires a clinical referral. They provide weekly updates regarding each youth on their caseload; participate in biweekly admissions meetings and provide input on the mental health needs of youth pending admission; see youth regularly as indicated on the treatment plan and at the request of youth, family, and/or facility as clinically indicated. MHC's provide contacts that meet the needs of the children and families served and provide effective interventions resulting in positive outcomes. Collateral activities will be provided that support treatment needs. The incumbent will focus on providing substance use disorder treatment to adolescents. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, social work or closely related academic field; OR an equivalent combination of education and clinical experience at or above a master's degree and experience as described above.
Special Notes
    Some positions require specialized training and experience working with specific client populations
Special Requirements
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for fingerprinting.
    This position requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
