The Position
Highway Equipment Mechanics maintain, repair, and modify medium (GVWR 10,500-26,000 lbs.) and heavy (GVWR greater than 26,000 lbs.) highway maintenance and construction equipment.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
The Equipment Mechanic I diagnoses, maintains, modifies, and repairs NDOT equipment and is responsible to keep equipment in the sub district's equipment fleet including a variety of light, medium and heavy equipment in good repair for routine maintenance and emergency response. Repairs include but are not limited to engine repair or replacement, repairing and rebuilding brake systems, steering and suspension system components, servicing of automatic and manual transmissions, electrical and wiring systems. They are responsible to restore systems throughout the fleet. They not only repair and maintain but they also fabricate and install parts, components, and special use items. Keeping the fleet in safe operating condition is critical to the daily operation that NDOT performs and in effectively preserving and managing our assets. The Mechanic I keeps the fleet in a safe operating state enabling safer operations for NDOT crews. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Completion of a recognized automotive/equipment repair apprenticeship program; OR completion of the Equipment Mechanic-in-Training program in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Notes
    A valid Class A or B Nevada commercial driver's license is required within six months of the date of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Special Requirements
    Incumbent is required to furnish their own mechanic's tools.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law requires random testing for controlled substances during employment.
    A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
