The Position
Incumbents function as managers who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate supervisors; develop policies and procedures; and allocate staff and resources to accomplish goals and objectives. The Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) is seeking a principal to work at Independence High School located on the campus of the Nevada Youth Training Center (NYTC) in Elko, NV. NYTC is a 64-bed staff secure facility for male and female youth ages 12 to 18. Located in Northern Nevada, Elko is a growing, progressive small city with an exceptional quality of life. With some of the most majestic views in Nevada and an abundance of recreational activities, Elko is an outdoor paradise! NYTC goal is to promote positive self-growth, create change in behavior, attitudes, values, and ways of thinking through education, therapeutic treatment, and appropriate medical and mental health services. Major duties and responsibilities include managing the school according to federal and state law. Initiate, design, and implement programs to meet the specific needs of Independence High School, including career and technical education (CTE). Experienced leadership in school level planning and establish and maintain an effective learning climate. Work cooperatively with all other facility staff and maintain a safe school environment. Assist with planning and supervising all emergency preparedness and drills. The principal will be required to assist in recruiting, screening, hiring, training, and evaluating all school personnel. Supervise extracurricular programs. Assist with the development of the annual budget and maintain federal funding, general knowledge of grant writing and reporting is recommended. Utilize technology for data collection and interpretation in areas of academics. Maintain appropriate personnel information and maintain inventory of all school property. Oversees the scheduling of students and school personnel. Provide guidance to individual students and resolve individual behavioral problems. Attends special events, meetings and other activities as assigned. General understanding of middle school and high school curriculum mapping. This is a full-time position with an anticipated work schedule of 6a-5p, Monday-Thursday that includes a variable work agreement with overtime after 40 hours per week.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Possession of a valid Nevada limited school administrator endorsement OR a professional school administrator endorsement and four years of teaching experience at K-12 in schools approved by the State.
Special Requirements
    Possession of a valid Nevada teacher's elementary, middle school/junior high, secondary, or special teaching (excluding Business and Industry or Special Qualifications) license is required.
    Possession of a valid Nevada limited school administrator endorsement is required at the time of appointment. A professional school administrator endorsement is required to continue in the position after the expiration of the limited endorsement
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, positions in this class have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
