The Position
Positions allocated to this series perform complex mathematical and statistical analysis on public health databases by applying statistical theories and principles to determine cause and effect relationships.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. This Biostatistician III position in the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Analytics will support the Nevada 988 / Crisis Response program. This position will be responsible to analyze crisis response and related statewide mental and behavioral health data to produce a variety of deliverables to support the 988 / Crisis Response program such as statistics, key metrics, performance and outcome measures, reports, and dashboards. This position will supervise a small team of analysts and will become a subject matter expert and technical lead responsible for critical activities associated with the 988 / Crisis Response program. The data this position will produce will help federal and state staff and policy makers as well as other stakeholders implement a data-driven approach to improve the program and outcomes for vulnerable Nevadans. The ideal candidate will have excellent analytical and technical skills including experience and expertise with various analytical software such as SAS and PowerBI. The Biostatistician III must be able to learn quickly, take initiative, work independently, use project management skills to complete work items, and must produce quality deliverables with an extremely high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. Additionally, the Biostatistician II must be an excellent communicator (demonstrating strong listening, questioning, and interpersonal skills) and effectively express ideas and information both verbally and in writing.
The Office of Analytics continually experiences a high volume of work, both on a recurring and ad hoc basis, and is always working on multiple complex projects at once in support of stakeholders such as the DHHS Director's Office, DHHS Divisions, the Governor's Office, the Legislative Counsel Bureau, State Legislators, federal partners, and other local, state, and national stakeholders. Work is continually re-prioritized based on shifting agency and stakeholder needs. A successful candidate for this Biostatistician III position will be able to thrive in this technical and fast-paced environment. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Master's degree from an accredited college or university in statistics, mathematics or closely related field and two years of professional experience in biostatistics linking data elements in a comprehensive data warehouse, monitoring data connection activities and preparing statistical reports based upon analysis of data; OR a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in statistics, mathematics or closely related field and three years of professional experience as described above; OR two years of experience as a Biostatistician II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience.
