Generally, salaries start at the lowest level of a step 1 and increase with each year of service to the highest level of a step 10.

The Position
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.
This recruitment is for a Staff Professional Trainee, underfilling an Environmental Scientist 3 position. Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology, and other environmental programs. This position is located with Mining in the Regulation Branch and serves as a Mine Compliance Inspector. Mine Compliance Inspectors conduct periodic inspections of mining facilities to determine compliance with operating plans, water pollution control permit requirements and regulations. In addition, the Inspector reviews and assesses mine quarterly and semi-annual monitoring reports for compliance; reviews petroleum contaminated soil management plans submitted by mining facilities, investigates spills, releases, and associated remediation activities for soil and groundwater releases; and initiates formal enforcement and corrective actions to achieve compliance. The Inspector works with the permit writers, permittees, Local, State, and Federal agencies, non -governmental organizations, and the general public to ensure that their respective concerns related to the water pollution control permitting program are adequately addressed. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any field; OR two years of journey level technical or paraprofessional experience in the field in which the applicant is to be trained.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    This position requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
