The Position
Incumbents function as managers who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate supervisors; develop policies and procedures; and allocate staff and resources to accomplish goals and objectives. Under administrative direction, plan, coordinate and direct the law enforcement activities and operations of a geographical region in a large division within the Department of Public Safety (DPS); serve as the deputy chief of a small to mid-sized division charged with responsibility for complex investigations; or serve as the chief of the records and identification bureau. Incumbents function as managers who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate supervisors; develop policies and procedures; and allocate staff and resources to accomplish goals and objectives.
THIS RECRUITMENT IS TO ESTABLISH A LIST THAT WILL BE USED FOR FUTURE VACANCIES THAT MAY OCCUR STATEWIDE FOR ALL DIVISIONS. You will only be considered for promotional opportunities in the geographic locations you specify in your application. Therefore, you must select any, and all cities where you are willing to accept a promotional assignment at the time of your application. This recruitment will include a written exercise weighted at 30%, as part of the application process. Please note, the clarifying information will be used as part of the internal knowledge, skills and abilities assessment for this position. The examination will be held in Carson City and Las Vegas are tentatively set for Aust 16- 17(subject to change). To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in business or public administration, criminal justice or related field and two years of management experience which included supervision of law enforcement personnel, budget preparation and monitoring, and participation in the development of policy and procedures; OR two years of experience as a DPS Lieutenant in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Incumbent must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy.
Special Requirements
    This position is subject to call-out or call-back.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Statewide travel is required.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
The Examination
Application Evaluation Exam
The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.
DPS CAPTAIN ASSESSMENT AND WRITING EXERCISE
This exam is the assessment and writing exercise.
Assessment Center Evaluation is weighted at 30%.

The Assessment Center Evaluation will be comprised of subject matter experts who will ask work situational questions to which your responses will be rated. At the Assessment Center Evaluation, you will also be required to provide a Writing Example based on a typical issue that would be handled at the Captain level and which is also rated. The work situational questions and the writing exercise will test the candidate's knowledge, skills and abilities required at entry level to DPS Captain and as posted on the Class Specifications.
The following additional questions are part of this Recruitment
1) Have you completed a job-related management program such as Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, FBI National Academy, Certified Public Manager, or equivalent nationally recognized training? Please attach your certification or other documentation.
2) Do you have advanced Nevada POST certifications or equivalent from another recognized certifying body? You must attach copies of your certification(s) to receive credit.
3) Describe your management experience, including the number of years at the Lieutenant level or above in a law enforcement agency.
4) Describe your experience, including the number of years, leading an assigned project or program or serving as a grant manager at the Lieutenant level or higher.
5) Describe your experience, including the number of years, developing policies and procedures.
6) Describe your budgeting experience in the following: a. Development of governmental budgets; b. Budget training such as Budget 101; and c. Supervision of fiscal staff.
7) Do you have any of the following: a) Associates Degree or equivalent (60 semester credits) in Criminal Justice, Organizational Management, Business Administration, Public Administration or related field; b) Bachelor's Degree or equivalent (120 semester credits) in Criminal Justice, Organizational Management, Business Administration, Public Administration or related field; c) Master's Degree in Criminal Justice, Organizational Management, Business Management, Public Administration or a related field; or d) Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Organizational Management, Business Management, Public Administration or related field?
