Polygraph/Background Examiners conduct polygraph examinations of parolees, probationers, and lifetime supervision offenders in criminal cases and/or applicants for employment, as requested by State and local law enforcement agencies and other agencies within the State; conduct preemployment background investigations for sworn employment candidates for the Department of Public Safety.
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) seeks highly motivated individuals to fill three (3) Polygraph/Background Examiner positions within the DPS Background Investigations Unit in Las Vegas and Carson City. The positions will conduct pre-employment background investigations and polygraph examinations on applicants seeking sworn positions; thoroughly review extensive background investigation packets (personal history questionnaires) for completeness and accuracy; gather and assess information provided by applicants to determine the validity and accuracy; and research and obtain candidates' driving records and criminal history records using state and federal databases such as NCIC, NCJIS, SCOPE and the judicial systems. Incumbents conduct interviews of references, current and past employers, coworkers, relatives, etc.; handle sensitive topics/information pertaining to applicants; strictly maintain confidentiality of information obtained and accessed; use good judgment and investigative techniques to appropriately ask clarifying questions; follow up on unanswered questions; identify and resolve conflicting statements and factors that may affect candidates' suitability for employment; maintain accurate and detailed interview notes; prepare comprehensive fact-based reports for consideration by appointing authorities; create, organize, and maintain background investigations files; and provide weekly statistical data to the unit supervisor for submission to the DPS Director's Office.
Upon completion of polygraph school, incumbents will conduct pre-employment polygraph examinations on sworn applicants. Ideal candidates have attention to details; possess strong verbal and written communication skills; interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with people of diverse backgrounds; organizational skills necessary to effectively maintain multiple caseloads; a working knowledge of interviewing and investigative techniques; and enjoy a busy and rewarding career in a law enforcement environment. NOTE: SELECTED CANDIDATES WILL ATTEND POLYGRAPH SCHOOL AND THE DPS WILL PAY FOR THE EXPENSES INVOLVED. CANDIDATES MUST QUALIFY FOR AND SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE POLYGRAPH EXAMINER LICENSURE WITHIN ONE YEAR OF APPOINTMENT AND AS A CONDITION OF CONTINUING EMPLOYMENT. POSITIONS MUST ALSO OBTAIN AND MAINTAIN CERTIFICATIONS TO ACCESS SENSITIVE CRIMINAL RECORDS SYSTEMS AS A CONDITION OF CONTINUING EMPLOYMENT. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work, business or public administration, or related field, and one year of professional experience in a law enforcement, social or behavioral services environment conducting background investigations and/or offender interviews to elicit responses pertaining to background history; writing and presenting comprehensive reports of findings; and managing a caseload; OR an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work, public or business administration or related field, and two years of professional experience as described above; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of professional experience as described above; OR current licensure as a Polygraph Examiner; OR two years of experience as a Polygraph/Background Examiner Trainee in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Candidates must qualify for, and successfully complete, the polygraph examiner licensure within one year of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment for the Polygraph/Background Supervisor and the Polygraph/Background Examiner. |

Candidates must successfully complete a background investigation to include fingerprinting and criminal history check prior to consideration for appointment. |

This position may require statewide travel at 25% or below. |

A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. |

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process. |
