Public Information Officers manage the public relations and information program for an agency on a statewide basis; write media releases, newsletters, and informational brochures; produce audiovisual presentations and take photographs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.
This is a Public Information Officer II (PIO) position for the Nevada Department of Education (NDE). This position may be located in either Las Vegas or Carson City. The PIO leads NDE communications efforts under and is on the Department's leadership team. They ensure the Department is represented professionally while providing a level of transparency appropriate for a constituent-focused public agency. The PIO writes press releases, delivers media pitches, and responds to questions and information requests from the public and the media, representing the Department on the record as necessary. The incumbent will develop communications plans for Department initiatives and manage and support the Superintendent and senior staff's public appearances, including drafting briefings, remarks, and/or presentation; works with local and national reporters and is responsible for seeking avenues to raise the Department, State Board of Education and Superintendent's profile, which in turn elevates the work of the State as a whole; and creates content for and manages NDE's presence on social media.
The incoming PIO will be responsible for creating a year-long strategic communications plan, working with NDE offices and inter-agency teams to promote programs and continuing to amplify the Department's 2020 Statewide Plan for the Improvement of Pupils. The PIO facilitates communication with stakeholders, including biweekly series of communications to district/school administrators and a monthly newsletter to educators; and oversees Department Public Records Requests, as well as the Department's website and its compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Standards for Accessible Design.
Success in this position requires problem solving and performance of specialized duties with an exceptional degree of independence, efficiency, and accuracy. The incumbent must be tech savvy and have the ability to prioritize and multi-task in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in journalism, English, public or community relations, communications or closely related field and three years of professional experience in administering or directing a public information program including writing media releases and newsletters, preparing and presenting speeches and multimedia presentations, independent media contact, development of public relations strategies and journalistic writing; OR one year of experience as a Public Information Officer I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. |

The incumbent may be required to work a flexible shift, to possibly include some weekends. |
