The Position
Statisticians gather statistical and other data and perform routine analysis and computations; compile reports and prepare charts, graphs, maps and diagrams to display the data and analysis.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. As a member of the Department of Health and Human Services - Office of Analytics - Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) Branch, the Statistician II evaluates and fulfills requests for data and ad hoc reports, analyzes statistics, writes report specifications, identifies trends, and presents findings for data from (DCFS). The Office of Analytics - DCFS Branch supports various services within the Division: Child Welfare, Juvenile Justice Services, Children's Mental and Behavioral Health Services, and Administrative and Support Services.
The Statistician II evaluates data requests, collaborates with the person who requested the data, and helps determines the best course of action. For reports requiring programming, the Statistician II writes clear and concise report specifications to be used by the developers to create the reports. The incumbent provides data to internal and external entities and completes ad hoc data requests by running appropriate reports or by creating queries and analyzing or summarizing the data using analytic software programming and statistical methods to complete analyses. The Statistician II must be an excellent communicator (demonstrating strong listening, questioning, and interpersonal skills) and effectively expresses ideas and information both verbally and in writing. Intermediate level experience with Excel is desirable and experience with SQL or SAS is a plus. This position is in a unit that regularly experiences a high volume of work both in ad hoc data requests and in recurring output; the work environment is fast paced. A successful candidate will be able to thrive in this fast-paced environment, work independently or with a group, and complete tasks and projects in a timely manner with an extremely high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
