In either a consultation or an enforcement mode, Industrial Hygienists identify, evaluate, and recommend controls for health hazards in the workplace through conducting inspections, investigations, surveys, research and analysis involving scientific disciplines such as chemistry, physics, engineering, epidemiology, toxicology, physiology, infection control, biomechanical and human factors engineering, and occupational health.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.
This is an Industrial Hygienist 1 position, underfilling an Industrial Hygienist 3, in the Department of Business and Industry, Division of Industrial Relations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Enforcement Section in Reno.The position will report to the Industrial Hygiene Supervisor. This position will be responsible for performing inspections of employers to ensure that they are following the health standards in 29 CFR 1910 General Industry Standards and 29 CFR 1926 Construction Standards. Incumbent will write legally substantiated reports to support violations of these standards and issue citations with monetary penalties. Industrial Hygienist duties include review of employer health programs and employee training, conducting employee and management interviews, and use of various test equipment to determine employee exposure to OSHA regulated health hazards. The job duties of this position require travel up to 25% of the time and requires standby duty on a rotating basis. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in industrial
hygiene, occupational safety and health, chemistry, physics, biology, toxicology, environmental engineering, or closely related field; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of
professional experience with the principal duty of safety officer in an industrial or construction setting which included conducting inspections or investigations for the purpose of evaluating workplace health and safety;
OR an equivalent combination of experience and education. |

A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment. |
