The Position
Staff Associate Engineers perform professional engineering assignments not requiring licensure by the State Board of Professional Engineers & Land Surveyors.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others. This position is located within NDOT's Stormwater/Special Projects Division in Reno, NV. Incumbent will: Implement and assist with coordination of the Department's Stormwater Program and the District II Maintenance Special Projects Division. To include: identify needed improvements and recommend possible solutions to meet District needs (maintenance self-performed via work order, maintenance performed via betterment, District contract, HQ contract) Identify projects for the DII betterment program and the HQ Capital Improvement Program, propose, design, implement & manage to completion District Contracts & special projects as assigned, perform effective management and inspection of construction contracts in a manner consistent with published NDOT standards, NDOT standard practices, and all applicable laws, coordinate projects and programs with other divisions, staff, local, State and federal agencies, and consultants to ensure requirements, project goals, and schedules are met.
Review and provide comments on project documents for NDOT sponsored projects and District encroachment permits, provide technical assistance on stormwater issues during the construction and maintenance phases of projects; perform field reviews inspections of approved Encroachment Permit and Maintenance Projects, perform routine field inspections of the storm sewer system to identify asset condition and identify potential illicit discharges and prioritize assets requiring maintenance utilizing the ArcGis platform, this position could spend approximately 80% of the working week in the field performing inspection duties. The ideal candidate should have a background in construction, design, hydraulics, and stormwater quality; proven experience preparing and reviewing technical reports, construction plans and specifications; excellent organizational and analytical skills; be able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a large organization with multiple priorities; resolve issues and make effective decisions; and have excellent interpersonal, communication, and consensus building skills. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or closely related engineering field and two years of professional engineering experience; OR Certification by the Nevada State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors as an Engineer Intern, and two years of professional engineering experience in civil engineering or closely related engineering field; OR two years of experience as a Staff I, Associate Engineer or Supervisor I, Associate Engineer in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, some positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must submit to pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Additional Position Criteria
    This position, unless otherwise directed, spends 80% of the working week in the field performing inspection duties.
    This position requires working in the road right-of-way adjacent to live traffic.
