Mental Health Counselors provide counseling, case management, direct clinical services, community and home based services, and behavioral and human services to mentally ill, developmentally disabled and/or emotionally disturbed clients in an outpatient, residential, community or similar setting.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. The Nevada Division of Child and Family Services is recruiting for a Mental Health Counselor 1 underfilling a Mental Health Counselor 2 (MHC) in the Youth Parole Bureau. MHC's work with youth, ages 12-18+, and their families after the Court has determined that commitment to the State and programming in one of three youth centers is the most appropriate placement to increase the opportunity for successful outcomes.
The Juvenile Justice MHC is responsible for performing a standardized comprehensive clinical assessment through interviews with the youth, family members, community systems, and personal observation. The MHC uses this information to coordinate care while youth is in placement and when planning for re-entry into the community.
MHCs are responsible for orienting families to parole. They provide a survey for the family to complete and answer any questions the family may have after the youth is released. They are also involved in on-going family engagement efforts that may include educational groups and individual services to support families in making behavioral changes that influence their child.
For the most complex cases, MHCs are the conduit between Youth Parole and the Youth Center staff, participating in treatment planning by attending treatment team meetings in which youth goals are determined, and appropriate interventions and plans are developed and modified as necessary to ensure they are youth and family driven and are measurable. Prior to release, MHCs are developing and implementing aftercare plans with youth parole counselors and other community supports to ensure transition into the community has the greatest opportunity for success.
