The Position
Life & SafetyInspector's survey and inspect public buildings, commercial and private industries and offices, and determine compliance with fire, life safety and hazardous materials codes and regulations, fire prevention laws, and State and federal safety standards.
The Nevada State Fire Marshal Division is recruiting to fill a vacancy located in the Carson City office. Incumbents must possess a Nevada State Fire Inspector I certification or equivalent upon appointment. Incumbents must also obtain the following certification within the first year of employment and maintain the certification as a condition of continuing employment: 1)Fire Inspector I with the International Code Council. An International Code Council Plans Examiner certification shall be obtained within 2 years of employment and maintained as a condition of continued employment. *Note that a certification as a Hazardous Materials Technician will not be required to qualify, however, the incumbent must have previous Fire & Life Safety Inspection experience. Also, this position will be stationed in Carson City but statewide travel is required. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in fire science, chemistry, environmental science or closely related field which included a minimum of 9 credits in hazardous waste, chemistry, environmental science or toxicology related courses, and one year of experience performing hazardous materials inspections, hazardous materials site remediation, or hazardous materials consultation; OR one year of experience as a Fire & Life Safety Inspector I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    For appointment to the Fire & Life Safety Inspector II, certification at the Hazardous Materials Awareness level, issued by the Nevada State Fire Marshal, is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    For appointment to the Fire & Life Safety Inspector II, Certification as a Nevada State Fire Inspector I, National Fire Protection Association Fire Inspector I, or as a Fire Inspector I with the International Code Council is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required.
    Frequent and statewide travel is required.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
Additional Position Criteria
    Certification as a Fire Inspector I with the International Code Council is required within one year of appointment. An International Code Council Plans Examiner certification is required within two years of appointment.
The Examination
Application Evaluation Exam
The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.
The following additional questions are part of this Recruitment
1) You must attach a copy of your certification at the Hazardous Materials Awareness level, issued by the Nevada State Fire Marshal to your application. Failure to do so will result in the denial of your application. Have you attached your certification?
2) You must attach a copy of your certification as a Nevada State Fire Inspector I, National Fire Protection Association Fire Inspector I, or as a Fire Inspector I with the International Code Council to your application.
