Directors of Nursing oversee and direct the 24-hour, full-time nursing services for psychiatric, developmentally disabled or correctional patients in facilities providing inpatient, residential, or a combination of inpatient or residential and outpatient services; perform administrative duties related to the management of direct nursing care; or oversee and direct the Community Medication Clinic program of Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services.
Incumbents function as managers who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate supervisors; develop policies and procedures; and allocate staff and resources to accomplish goals and objectives. The Chief of Nursing Services manages the nursing function for the Department of Corrections. In this role, the Chief will foster a collaborative nursing environment while partnering with physicians to ensure smooth workflow. This position may be located in Carson City or the Las Vegas area depending on the location of the most qualified candidate.
Overall responsibilities include promoting the mission, vision and values of the organization while maintaining regulatory, compliance approvals and accreditations, as well as upholding nursing standards. The incumbent will cultivate cross functional relationships across departments and work with senior management and medical staff to develop strategic plans; serve as a spokesperson for the entire nursing department; organize, direct and administer nursing-patient care best practices; maintain quality assessments and improvements; and facilitate opportunities for education and professional advancement of employees.
Management responsibilities include development and implementation of master staffing plans within budget constraints and available personnel; determine appropriate staffing levels for the changing medical needs of incarcerated population; develop and implement protocols and procedures to facilitate the safe and secure storage and administration of medications, narcotics and related supplies; oversee inventory; identify discrepancies; take corrective action and employ proper safeguards; vet information; monitor evaluation of performance improvement; and use judgement to appropriately delegate responsibilities.
Statewide travel is required approximately 25% to 50% of the time. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and six years of professional nursing experience in an institutional or hospital setting, three years of which included developing policies and procedures, facility staffing plans and budgets, and working with administration as a member of the management team; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. |

A Bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or associate's degree in nursing and one year of experience. |

Probationary employees working for the Department of Corrections must successfully complete 40 hours of "pre-service" training provided by the department. |
