The Position
Radiation Control Specialists determine compliance with federal and State regulation pertaining to radiation; inspect and investigate complaints involving radiation sources and radiation producing devices.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. This position is located with the Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Radiation Control Program in Las Vegas, Nevada. The position is specifically responsible to license, inspect and investigate ionizing radiation sources statewide to determine potential hazards to the public; implement radiation control regulations adopted by the Nevada State Board of Health pursuant to NRS 459 (radioactive materials/X-ray). In addition, the position will be responsible for continued development of radiation producing machine program inspection procedures, program regulatory analysis and development and program staff training.

To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in radiological science, X-ray technology, health physics, nuclear medicine, chemistry, math, biology, or closely related field and three years of professional radiological regulatory experience; OR one year of experience as a Radiation Control Specialist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Notes
    Depending upon assignment, incumbents may be required to pass a radioactive materials training and/or X-ray inspection course.
    Incumbents assigned to oversee federal facilities will be required to successfully complete federal training.
    Incumbents assigned to radioactive materials control will be required to pass appropriate U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission training courses and undergo periodic audits.
    Mammography program incumbents will be required to obtain and maintain U.S. Food and Drug Administration certification in accordance with the Mammography Quality Standards Act.
    Incumbents must comply with all applicable State and federal security and safeguard requirements.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and for continued employment
    Division duty officer rotation and call-back availability for public health incidents/emergencies are required for all positions.
