The Position
Legal Secretaries perform specialized secretarial duties for attorneys, administrative law judges, and/or hearings/appeals officers including preparing legal documents and correspondence; calendaring; maintaining records; and providing assistance on routine problems and inquiries which are not of a legal nature.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. OR Incumbents perform basic tasks or elements of the job not requiring the additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at the next level in the series.
The Legal Secretary I position will assist the Legal Secretary II in supporting four Deputy Attorney Generals and assist with legal administrative responsibilities in the Transportation DMV/DPS Division in Carson City, Nevada. The deputies assigned to this division represent the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Public Safety with its various subdivisions in legal matters before administrative, state, federal, and appeals courts. Accuracy, judgment, attention to detail, confidentiality, excellent communication skills, and being able to work well as part of a team are essential skills for this position. Knowledge of various court rules, procedures, electronic filing, and administrative processes and procedures are preferred, however, some of these skills may be acquired on the job given the aptitude and experience of the candidate. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of clerical experience, one of which was performing legal secretarial work in a trainee capacity; OR one year of experience as a Legal Secretary Trainee in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Notes
    An Associate of Science degree with a legal secretarial emphasis is equivalent to one year of legal secretarial trainee experience.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required.
