The Position
Mental Health Counselors provide counseling, case management, direct clinical services, community and home based services, and behavioral and human services to mentally ill, developmentally disabled and/or emotionally disturbed clients in an outpatient, residential, community or similar setting.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. The Division of Child and Family Services is recruiting for a full-time Mental Health Counselor I to underfill a Mental Health Counselor II position. This position will be at located at the Nevada Youth Training Center in Elko, Nevada. The Nevada Youth Training Center (NYTC), established in 1915, is a staff-secure facility that includes seven separate housing units for youth committed to the State for correctional care. Three of the seven cottages hold 16 youth who have graduated the Reception and Classification Cottage. NYTC has the capacity to serve up to 160, but currently is legislatively funded for 60 youth ages 12 to 18. The Mental Health Counselor I completes risk and/or suicide assessments, and documents and follows the reporting chain for these incidents as needed or requested by the youth, family, therapist, or facility. The Mental Health Counselor I evaluates for and makes referrals as needed for psychological testing, psychiatric evaluations, substance abuse treatment, and other specialized programming that requires a clinical referral.
The incumbent will provide weekly updates for the "Committed to Change" program on each youth on their caseload; participate in a bi-weekly admissions meeting and provide input on the mental health needs of youth pending admission; sees youth as regularly as indicated on the treatment plan and at the request of the youth, family and/or facility as clinically indicated; provides contacts that both meet the needs of the children and families served; and provides effective interventions resulting in positive outcomes and collateral activities supporting treatment needs. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, social work or closely related academic field; OR an equivalent combination of education and clinical experience at or above a master's degree and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required.
    This position requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
