The Position
Agricultural Inspectors perform sampling and inspection of agricultural products at shipping point inspection facilities, and participate in pest control and noxious weed eradication; check and grade condition of fruits and vegetables, and assist plant pathologists and entomologists in the preparation of samples for analysis.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. The Department of Agriculture, Division of Plant Industry has seasonal positions available. One vacancy is in the Noxious Weeds Program. The position will be located and based in Sparks. The incumbent will be required to travel to agricultural production and rangeland areas across the state of Nevada. Main duties required of the position incumbent consist of: performing statewide noxious weed surveys; collecting noxious weed infestation data using GPS technologies for future mapping; performing vegetation monitoring and collecting density readings from biological control release sites; properly uploading collected data into designated website portals per grant guidelines; and assisting with outreach activities per the USDA Assessment of Biological Controls and USFS Cooperative Weed Management grants. Per grant requirements, the incumbent will monitor noxious weed sites twice seasonally where biological control agents were released, assist the noxious weeds program manager perform new biological control releases, and assist other noxious weeds program staff perform certified weed-free forage and gravel inspections. The Entomology Section also has seasonal vacancies based out of Sparks. Incumbents receive training in the performance of field inspections and surveys for entomology under the direct supervision of the Agricultural Inspector IV and Entomologist.
Incumbents will be required to travel to agricultural production and rangeland areas, across the state of Nevada. Main duties include placing and collecting traps, preparing and labeling specimens, and collection and recording of data electronically using handheld computers and phones. Use of pesticides to treat economic populations may be required. Incumbents may be assigned to assist in other related Plant Industry disease and field surveys as required. Please note that this recruitment may also be used to underfill certain Agricultural Inspector 3 positions. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of experience in agricultural sciences or related sciences performing agriculture duties; OR one year of experience as an Agricultural Inspector I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination or education and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    The ability to travel 50% of time is required.
    Flexible and/or rotating shifts are required.
    This position requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
Additional Position Criteria
    This position requires statewide travel at least 50% of the time.
