The Position
Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This position is located with the Environmental Division in Las Vegas. Incumbent will be responsible for conducting Desert Tortoise fence inspections; performing biological field studies, data reviews, construction monitoring and research. This position also attends and participates in project related meetings, field reviews, plan and specification reviews, public meetings, and other functions to provide specific input for project development. The incumbent will secure state and federal permits in conformance with the Endangered Species Act. THIS RECRUITMENT MAY BE USED TO UNDERFILL AN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST III. INCUMBENT MAY PROGRESS TO THE NEXT LEVEL UPON MEETING THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE, AND WITH THE APPROVAL OF THE APPOINTING AUTHORITY. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and 18 months of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and three and a half years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR 18 months of experience as an Environmental Scientist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Notes
    Some positions may require specialized education and/or experience which will be identified at the time of recruitment.
Special Requirements
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Additional Position Criteria
    Experience with the Mojave or Sonoran Desert tortoise is required.
    Experience with noxious weed identification and management is required.
    Experience preparing biological assessments and reports is required.
    Experience with other Federal and State threatened, endangered and special status species is required.
