The Position
Family Services Specialists assist families in achieving self-sufficiency; determine eligibility for a variety of public assistance and health related programs; and/or provide coordinated employment and training services including assessment, vocational guidance, support services, and education to clients; and/or provide child support enforcement services.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. The Division of Welfare and Supportive Services is hiring for vacancies located in Ely, Nevada. Family Services Specialists interview clients, explain eligibility, and elicit information to determine which public assistance programs are applicable; assist clients in completing required applications; and research and verify information provided by clients in order to confirm citizenship, residency, household composition, current and previous earnings, and projected household expenses.
Incumbents also evaluate and process information to establish eligibility, calculate income, and make determinations in accordance with program regulations, policies, and procedures and within required timeframes. Under close supervision, positions in this series may specialize in one service area or may work in multiple areas as a generalist, depending upon the needs of the agency. This is the entry level in the series which provides for progression to the journey level upon satisfactory completion of the required training period, successfully meeting minimum qualifications, and with the recommendation of the appointing authority. Some positions require the incumbent to accept an intermittent schedule. An intermittent position may be required to work a full-time schedule however, may be called to work at any time and must be willing to work an intermittent schedule with hours that may vary, depending on changes in the amount of work. The starting salary for newly hired state employees will be at the beginning of the pay range listed above. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience in a clerical/administrative/program support role which included customer relations; obtaining, verifying and evaluating information; organizing and prioritizing work in order to meet timelines and standards; applying and explaining program rules, regulations, policies and procedures; and performing mathematical computations; OR two years as an Administrative Assistant II in Nevada State service; OR sixty semester credits from an accredited college or university in general studies; business administration, social science or human services and one year of experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    In accordance with NRS 293.5045, a voter registration agency shall not knowingly employ a person whose duties will include the registration of voters if they have been convicted of a felony involving theft or fraud. Most positions in this series fall under this NRS.
    For most positions in this series, applicants must meet the minimum typing speed established by the agency at the time of recruitment.
Special Requirements
    Candidates must submit to background checks and fingerprinting upon appointment.
Additional Position Criteria
    A typing certificate issued within the last twelve (12) months must accompany your application to verify your net typing speed of a least 35 wpm in a five minute test. This typing certificate may be attained through any Nevada Job Connect office at no charge or through a staffing agency for a nominal fee. No online typing tests will be accepted.

The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.
