Correctional Nurses provide professional nursing care to patients in a correctional setting.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. Positions are located at Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC) in Carson City. Incumbents provide professional nursing care to inmates by identifying patient health care needs; making comprehensive clinical observations/evaluations of health needs; and recording/reporting indicative signs/symptoms of physical and mental condition. Incumbents prepare nursing care plans; evaluate needs and develop nursing diagnoses, plans for treatment, services and health education based on the present and predicted needs of the inmate; identify immediate and long-term care goals; conduct sick calls for inmates with medical complaints; identify inmates requiring immediate medical treatment; and obtain physicians orders for treatment.
Correctional Nurses administer medication; ensure correct time, dosage and route of administration; deliver medication to inmates confined to cells; obtain and distribute non-prescription medications; count controlled medications, needles, syringes, and sharps to ensure security; and monitor inmate for medication side effects and/or allergic reaction. Incumbents perform physical assessments; obtain samples for laboratory tests; perform assigned laboratory tests; and provide emergency medical treatments such as CPR and first aid. Nurses document progress in the medical charts; review charts for changes in orders and transcribe; prepare written reports, records and summaries; and audit charts and compile statistics. Incumbents prepare and maintain medical treatment rooms; order stock medical supplies and equipment; coordinate and participate in clinic sessions; schedule appointments; conduct screening tests; and give immunization injections. Nurses are responsible to maintain safety, health and wellbeing of inmates in the therapeutic environment; assist in physically restraining hostile or combative patients; coordinate and schedule outside medical appointments for inmates; and arrange for transportation to outside medical appointments. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

License as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which was in a correctional or institutional setting; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. |

A Bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or Associates degree in nursing and one year of experience. |
|
Out of state applicants must have a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada Board of Nursing at the time of appointment and must obtain permanent licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as a condition of employment. |
