The Position
Public Information Officers manage the public relations and information program for an agency on a statewide basis; write media releases, newsletters, and informational brochures; produce audiovisual presentations and take photographs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others. This is a Public Information Officer II (PIO) position with the Department of Education (NDE) located in Carson City. The PIO leads NDE communications efforts and is on the Superintendent's Cabinet and Leadership team. The incumbent will ensure the Department is represented professionally while providing a level of transparency appropriate for a constituent-focused public agency. The PIO writes press releases, delivers media pitches and responds to information requests; develops communications plans for Department's initiatives and coordinates and prepares briefings for the Superintendent's media availabilities; and works with local and national reporters and is responsible for seeking outlets to raise the Superintendent's profile, which in turn elevates the work of the Department as a whole. The PIO creates content for and manages NDE's presence on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. The incoming PIO will be responsible for creating a year-long strategic communications plan and rolling out the Department's 2020 State Improvement Plan.
The PIO facilitates communication with stakeholders, and the incoming PIO will be responsible for establishing a regular series of communications from the Superintendent to teachers and families. The PIO manages and supports the Superintendent and senior staff's public appearances, including drafting remarks and presentations and supervises the Department Webmaster and an Administrative Assistant. This position requires problem solving and performance of duties with an exceptional degree of independence, efficiency, and accuracy. The incumbent must have the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. This position must collaborate courteously with NDE staff, government agencies, and the public. Applicants must be highly proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, and social media platforms. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in journalism, English, public or community relations, communications or closely related field and three years of professional experience in administering or directing a public information program including writing media releases and newsletters, preparing and presenting speeches and multimedia presentations, independent media contact, development of public relations strategies and journalistic writing; OR one year of experience as a Public Information Officer I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

    Experience with social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn is required.
