The Position
Welders plan and lay out projects and join metal components together using gas welding, arc welding, soldering and brazing processes to fabricate, strengthen and/or repair components, equipment and fixtures.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others. The incumbent will work in a correctional setting at Ely State Prison and function as a lead worker for an inmate crew on a regular basis and document inmate performance through completion of periodic performance reports.
Incumbents are also responsible for implementing security procedures which include securing the work area form unauthorized inmates and accountability for assigned inmates, staff, tools and equipment. This position will maintain tool organization in the automotive and welding shop ad assist with automotive repairs. Knowledge of other craft disciplines a plus but not required. The ability to support and learn other crafts, such as skilled pluming, carpentry, painting, electrical, mechanical, equipment maintenance and repair, concrete work is a must. The ability to research, obtain quotes and submit Nevada Department of Corrections (NDOC) documents will be required. The incumbent will organize and maintain records of work performed according to Division procedures and guidelines; prepare and submit reports/requests and/or requested, including but not limited to , work orders, credit card purchase slips, vehicle mileage and maintenance report, timesheets, leave requests, etc.; plan layout and prepare cost estimates for projects; and purchase material, maintain inventories and solve issues/problems involved in maintaining buildings, facilities and equipment. This position may require traveling to multiple locations and may require a flexible work schedule for emergency situations (stand-by-status) and projects as they arise and call backs. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Completion of an approved welding apprenticeship training program followed by one year of journey level welding experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
    Welding certification issued by the American Welding Society (AWS) is required at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    Requires a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
