Biologists conduct fisheries, wildlife and/or habitat management projects and research studies including data collection, analysis and interpretation; develop and implement project proposals and work plans; prepare recommendations; and participate in public relations activities.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.
The Biologist 1 implements work programs for Federal Aid Grants from the US Bureau of Reclamation Lower Colorado River Multi- Species Conservation Program (MSCP). Primary duties include day-to-day implementation of projects for hatchery rearing of and research with Federally endangered Razorback Suckers, Bonytail, and other native aquatic species at Lake Mead State Fish Hatchery and monitoring of Razorback Sucker and Bonytail grow-out ponds at Overton State Wildlife Management Area and other off-channel sites. Incumbent implements work activities for care and rearing of Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed native fishes, develops and manages databases, develops monitoring programs for grow-out ponds, and assists other fisheries biologists with field projects. This position is a grant-funded time-limited (GFTL) position. This means it is a position that is paid entirely as the result of a federal grant. The duration of employment shall not exceed the life of the federal grant that funds the position. In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, wildlife management or closely related field; OR graduation from high school and two years of technical wildlife management or fisheries experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and professional experience in conducting research studies; data collection, analysis and interpretation; and development and implementation of project proposals for fisheries, wildlife and/or habitat management projects.
Special Notes
Working on occasional nights and/or weekends may be required.
Special Requirements
Statewide travel and outdoor work is required.
A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
