Mental Health Counselors provide counseling, case management, direct clinical services, community and home based services, and behavioral and human services to mentally ill, developmentally disabled and/or emotionally disturbed clients in an outpatient, residential, community or similar setting.

Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.

This position is located at High Desert State Prison (HDSP) in Indian Springs, Nevada. Under general supervision, incumbents provide psychological services to inmates in a correctional setting. In addition, this position involves report writing, treating mentally ill offenders, providing group and individual counseling, teaching psycho-educational classes, and responding to crises. The incumbent provides treatment to inmates through psycho-educational and other formats, utilizing evidence-based an scientifically researched program models; develops and implements individual and group treatment plans providing for the constitutional care of inmates consistent with the American Correctional Association (ACA) standards, American Psychological Association (APA) standards, Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) and NDOC Administrative Regulations (ARs); and provides individual clinical treatment to inmates using appropriate therapeutic strategies and recognized "best practices."
