Park Interpreters plan, organize, provide and supervise a variety of interpretive facilities, services and activities and assist in the operation and maintenance of an assigned State park.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. This position is located at Valley of Fire State Park near Overton, Nevada. Valley of Fire State Park is nationally recognized for its natural heritage and scenic value. It has significant cultural, natural, paleontological, and scenic resources. Candidates must possess skill and abilities to function in a fast paced and fluid environment.
Job duties include visitor services, interpretation of park resources, custodial services, building and grounds maintenance, fee collection, visitor center supervision, and volunteer management. This position is responsible for developing, preparing, and implementing park interpretive programs and tours as well as managing and curating historic items and structures. Park fees are collected, deposits are prepared, and emergency response provided in both medical and search and rescue situations. This position informs the public of park rules and regulations and ensures compliance with park policies and procedures.
This position requires the use of general office equipment, cash registers, credit card machines, 4 wheel drive vehicles, and ATVs. Basic skills required include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and projectors. This position is will also assist with the park's Facebook entries.
Park Interpreters are required to work variable hours, evenings, weekends, holidays, special events, and respond to emergencies. Park housing is not available at this location. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major or minor in park management, outdoor recreation management, history/folklore, education, ecology, forestry, biology, agriculture, natural or environmental sciences, horticulture, wildlife management, museum management, business or public administration or related field and one year of professional park experience which included developing, managing and presenting interpretive and/or educational activities; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. |
