The Position
Mental Health Counselors provide counseling, case management, direct clinical services, community and home based services, and behavioral and human services to mentally ill, developmentally disabled and/or emotionally disturbed clients in an outpatient, residential, community or similar setting.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. This position is located within the Aging and Disability Services Division (ADSD) of the Department of Health and Human Services - Desert Regional Center (DRC) and is in Las Vegas, NV. ADSD provides an atmosphere of innovative thinking, teamwork, friendly co-workers, and promotes a positive work environment. The mission of the Aging and Disability Services Division (ADSD) is to provide leadership and advocacy in the planning, development and delivery of a high quality, comprehensive support service system across the lifespan to allow all of Nevada's elders, children and adults with disabilities or special health care needs, to live independent, meaningful and dignified lives to the greatest extent possible.
Mental Health Counselors work with individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and related conditions such as Autism, Seizures, Cerebral Palsy, and Traumatic Brain Injury. In many cases, the individuals served also have mental health diagnoses. Incumbents conduct assessments through comprehensive record review and interviews with individuals, family and team members. They integrate and analyze information to inform eligibility decisions and make recommendations for the appropriate level of care in supported living and work settings, ensuring that support is offered at the least restrictive level possible. Incumbents oversee rehabilitation plan development and assist with periodic review and monitoring of data to ensure fidelity and efficacy. Counselors participate in person-centered planning by attending support team meetings in which customer goals are determined and appropriate strategies and plans are developed and modified as necessary; coordinate and integrate services among members of support teams and provider agencies; provide consultation services to consumers and their team members; and provide training to staff and providers as directed to build the service delivery capacity for behavioral support. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, social work or closely related academic field and two years of post-master's degree professional mental health counseling experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and clinical experience at or above a Master's degree and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
