The Position
Foresters perform professional duties in forestry, natural resource management and conservation, fire prevention and suppression, and related areas.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. The Division of Forestry's mission is to provide professional natural resource and wildland fire management services to enhance, conserve and protect forest, rangeland and watershed values, endangered plants and other native flora. Under the supervision of the Western Region Resource Management Officer, the position is responsible for implementing the natural resource program in the Nevada Division of Forestry's Western Region. This position will, through collaboration and cooperative efforts, provide technical assistance to State, Tribal, Local Government, and private landowners through natural resource program areas including but not limited to fuels management, biomass utilization, post-fire rehabilitation and restoration, urban and community forestry, rangeland watershed and forest stewardship, protected plant management, and restoration plant materials. This position will make landowner contacts, create project plans, conduct archaeological surveys and threatened and endangered species clearances, obtain all necessary landowner waivers and permits/variances, coordinate crews for project work, and monitor crews and/or contractors for project compliance.
Project management activities will require regular travel throughout the region, the ability to work independently, and may involve work in arduous terrain and inclement weather. This position will also provide technical training on currently accepted natural resource management techniques to general public, professional, and internal staff audiences. The position is state general funded. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in forestry or closely related natural resources field and one year of professional natural resource experience in areas such as forest health, forest insect and disease identification and treatment, and vegetation management at a level comparable to Forester I, Nursery Specialist I or Conservation Crew Supervisor III, or one year of firefighting experience at a level comparable to Firefighter II in Nevada State service; OR one year of experience as a Forester I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
The Examination

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.

1) Describe your training and/or experience related to the following: a) currently acceptable vegetation management and fuels reduction practices; b) wildfire rehabilitation and restoration practices and/or recommendations; c) State Historic Preservation Office clearances; d) threatened and endangered species; and e) common forest and/or plant pests as they relate to vegetation management practices.
2) Describe your experience planning, implementing, and coordinating vegetation/fuels management projects and the software or applications that you have used to assist your efforts.
3) Describe your experience working with local, state, and federal agencies, NGOs, contractors, and private landowners to coordinate and implement natural resource management projects.
4) Describe your experience writing technical reports for audiences of varying skill, education, and technical levels.
5) Describe your experience tracking and balancing budgets for equipment, operating, and contractual costs.
6) Describe your experience obtaining proper permits, clearances, and approvals to complete watershed, range, and forestry work on state and private lands.
7) Describe your experience creating and providing training and educational programs for the general public and/or other agencies and cooperators.
