The Position
Librarians are typically assigned to the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records (NSLAPR) Division and perform a broad range of professional level duties in support of a library that organizes and provides access to a wide selection of materials in a variety of formats. Incumbents perform administrative work in planning, coordinating and directing activities within one or more functional areas of the library including, but not limited to, acquisitions; cataloging; reference; circulation; collection maintenance; serials; document delivery/interlibrary loan; government documents; library services for the blind and physically disabled; and/or statewide library development.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others. The Nevada Historical Society (NHS) in the Division of Museums and History within the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Librarian/Archivist. The NHS is a public history center that incorporates the functions of a research library and archive, a museum and public programs venue, and educational offerings from primary school to graduate-level academic research. The NHS is moving into a larger facility to expand our community engagement for children and adults through exhibit tours, public programming, research opportunities, and educational programs. The Nevada Historical Society Librarian/Archivist is responsible for providing leadership, vision, access, planning and management for the manuscript, photography and library collections known collectively as the archives of the NHS. The Nevada Historical Society has a holistic approach to its research collections and includes access to all materials for research, Manuscripts, Photography, Library and Artifact collections. Management of the manuscript, photography and library collections of NHS performs at the intersection of library, archival and museum services to ensure that all collections are well-managed and available for use by the public. This position reports to the NHS Collections Manager. In accordance with NHS Collection Management policies and nationally accepted professional library and archives standards of practice (American Library Association, ALA, and Society of American Archivists, SAA), the Librarian/Archivist establishes policies and procedures for the NHS archives. They manage the overall access to the Nevada Historical Society's archival collections in all formats: textual, architectural, photographic, audio/visual, micrographic, digital and multimedia formats. The duties include processing; arrangement; cataloging; description; inventories; preservation; updating and maintaining procedures and policies; managing and maintaining relevant databases; strategic planning; budget management; personnel and volunteer supervision; project fundraising; participation in public programs; assessing user experience and use statistics; and providing information for reports to the Board of Museums and History.
In addition to management and planning functions, the position plays an active role in the day-to-day operations of the NHS archives. The Librarian/Archivist can expect to spend part of their time in work that sustains the Nevada Historical Society's public services and advances the overall mission and strategic plan of the Nevada Historical Society. This includes supporting reference, research and instruction; developing new initiatives; assistance with grant-writing; cleaning and migrating legacy data into current collection management tools and into a variety of other systems for public access; creating catalog records for online catalog and PastPerfect collection management tools; operating the research room and other duties as assigned. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Master's degree in a program accredited by the American Library Association and two years of professional library experience which included a combination of at least three of the following: original cataloging/metadata, reference, e-resources, social media, managing government publications and/or assisting in collection development; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university which included 21 semester credits in library studies and three years of professional library experience as described above; OR Associate's degree from an accredited college or university which included 21 semester credits in library studies and four years of professional library experience as described above; OR graduation from high school or equivalent; 21 semester credits in library studies; and seven years of library experience as described, five years of which were at the professional level; OR one year of experience as a Librarian II in Nevada State service which included 21 semester credits in library studies; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above which included 21 semester credits in library studies.
