The Position
Highway Equipment Mechanics maintain, repair, and modify medium (GVWR 10,500-26,000 lbs.) and heavy (GVWR greater than 26,000 lbs.) highway maintenance and construction equipment.
Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.
This position is located at the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) within the Las Vegas Equipment Shop. Under general supervision, incumbents function as a first line supervisor for a group of equipment shop personnel comprised of three or more lower level mechanics and skilled craft workers. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, providing training, assigning and reviewing work, performing discipline, and evaluating performance. In addition, incumbents function as an assistant to the supervisor of a major district equipment shop and may perform complex diagnosis, repairs, modifications, and specialized design, and fabrication work. This class is distinguished from Highway Equipment Mechanic II by the responsibility for supervision of equipment shop personnel on a permanent basis. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Completion of a recognized automotive/equipment repair apprenticeship program followed by two years of journey level experience in the maintenance and repair of medium and heavy duty vehicles and equipment; OR completion of the Equipment Mechanic-in-Training program in Nevada State service followed by two years of journey level experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Highway Equipment Mechanic II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Notes
    A valid Class A or B Nevada commercial driver's license is required within six months of the date of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
Special Requirements
    Incumbent is required to furnish their own mechanic's tools.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law required random testing for controlled substances during employment.
The Examination

The exam will consist of a rating of training and experience weighted 100%. It is essential that applications include extensively detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Your score will be based on the information provided in your application and your responses to the questions asked below. If there are several parts to a question, answer each part separately. Along with each answer, identify the position(s) and/or training (as described in your application) where you gained the background asked for in the question. 1) Describe your experience, including the number of years, with diagnostic procedures to troubleshoot both electrical and mechanical problems found while operating a light, medium, heavy and/or specialized pieces of equipment.
2) Describe your experience, including the number of years, identifying safety hazards in your work area, including waste materials. Please include examples.
3) Describe your experience, including the number of years, supervising staff in an equipment repair shop. Please include your duties such as reviewing work assignments, training, scheduling, performance evaluations, etc.
4) Describe your experience modifying or designing a specific piece of equipment.
5) Describe your experience, including the number of years, planning, organizing and calculating the time and cost of repairs and preparing work orders for an equipment shop.
6) Describe your experience: a) ordering supplies; and b) documenting condition of equipment.
