Under immediate supervision and direction of a P.O.S.T. certified Category 3 custody officer, Correctional Assistants perform a variety of entry level assignments which do not require P.O.S.T. certification. Positions allocated to this class are trained and oriented to the field of Corrections with the hopeful progression to correctional officer positions in the future. Correctional assistants do not respond to emergency situations, riots, and/or altercations involving inmates, do not supervise inmates, and do not perform security functions such as inmate movement or escort. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
Correctional Assistants work to ensure the health and safety of staff and inmates; assist custody staff in duties required in non-housing areas such as the visiting room, law library, chapel, mail room, property and laundry room; feed inmates in a timely manner; maintain sanitary and orderly living conditions; supervise and deliver inmate mail and correspondence; conduct formal and informal inmate population counts; and assist the unit officers and Case Work staff as needed. This position will be located at High Desert State Prison.

High school graduation or equivalent and one year of work experience. |

Applicants must meet current Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code. |

A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. |

Selected applicants must pass a psychological test prior to appointment |
|
Incumbent must be available to work any shift or post assignment and must be willing to work overtime or short notice, as well as weekends and holidays; be recalled to work on regular days off or at other times in cases of emergency or staff shortages; and be placed on standby status if necessary. |

Applicant must pass all phases of orientation training (during the probationary period or be subject to dismissal). |

A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. |
