The Position
Correctional Officers maintain and supervise inmates in state Correctional facilities in a controlled humane environment. This position may be at a Maximum Security Prison.
This IS NOT a "traditional" Sr. Correctional Officer position. Incumbents are responsible for the development, evaluation and delivery of training curriculum and programs. The position involves the development, design and implementation of training schedules; development and implementation of an evaluation process for students and trainees; development and conduct of training needs assessment tools and programs; review, evaluation, updating and personalizing of lesson plans. Applicants must have Basic Instructor Development (BID) certificate. If claiming veteran status you must attach a copy of your DD214 to your application for this announcement. The DD214 must be attached to your application to be considered. If claiming disabled veteran status you must attach all supporting documentation from the VA stating disabled veteran status. Veterans Status documentation must be attached to your application to be considered. Make sure you update your profile in NVAPPS with all current information. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    One year of journey level experience as a correctional officer in an adult correctional institution which included certification as a peace officer under P.O.S.T. or its equivalent; OR one year of experience as a Correctional Officer in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Notes
    Applicants must meet current Peace Officer Standards Training (POST-Category 3) requirements including the physical agility testing as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code.
    Applicants must pass a strict annual physical examination in accordance with Nevada State Prisons Standards and to meet requirements of the provisions of the Heart/Lung Bills.
    An Associate's Degree in corrections, criminal justice, or a closely related field may be substituted for six months of the required journey level experience.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
    Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
Additional Position Criteria
    Applicants must have Basic Instructor Development (BID) certificate. You MUST attach a copy of your certificate to your application.

The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.
