The Position
Psychiatric Nurses provide professional nursing care to individuals with developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities or social, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, in an institution or out-patient setting in accordance with the authorized scope of practice specified in the Nurse Practice Act.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. This position is part of the SOUTHERN NEVADA ADULT MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES (SNAMHS) Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement Department. The designated Patient Safety Officer will have primary oversight of the facility-wide patient safety program. The Patient Safety Officer will guide others within the facility towards process improvements which support the reduction of errors and other factors that contribute to unintended adverse patient outcomes. The Patient Safety Officer provides leadership for safety assessments, coordinates the activities of the patient safety committee, educates on the system-based causes for errors, consults with management and staff, and communicates evidenced-based practices regarding effective patient safety strategies to others within the organization. The incumbent will promote a "culture of safety" by providing leadership and direction to promote safety agency wide, evaluate and improve the patient safety program based on internal needs, external requirements, standards and practices.
The incumbent will conduct regular assessments of patient risks and will work closely with the Patient Safety Committee, Infection Control, Performance Improvement and the Executive Medical Committee to mitigate potential patient harm; review and analyze incident reports, recommend incident reports for Division Level review; and apply corrective action as needed. This position requires contact with hospital staff to maintain an understanding of the hospital's patient safety practices, needs, and a resource to staff in matters of patient safety; requires respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, management, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment. Ideal candidates will have excellent verbal and writing skills; advanced interpersonal communication skills to provide effective consultation and collaboration; the ability to organize and define problems, develop strategies, and carry out action plans; advanced analytical skills to trend and analyze data; capable of exercising sound judgment, attention to detail and making independent decisions; and leadership ability required to prompt cooperation, confidence and respect from personnel. This is an Inpatient Nursing full-time position Monday through Thursday from 7 AM-5:30 PM. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which included working in a facility or institution with individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities or intellectual disabilities; OR one year of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
Special Notes
    A Bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or Associate's degree in nursing and one year of experience.
    Out of state applicants must have a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing at the time of appointment and must obtain permanent licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as a condition of continuing employment.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
    A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
